Projected ACS Divisional Programs INSTRUCTIONS

SUBJECTS H e r e are p r o g r a m s a r r a n g e d for American Chemical Society National M e e t i n g s for winter and spring 1963 (Jan. 13 to 18, Cincinnati, and M a r c h 31 to April 5, Los Angeles) and later and for national symposia >r ganized by individual divisions. Please note that all divisions r e q u i r e :

Instrumentation for See abo the Detection of Pesticides

• Title of p a p e r . • T i m e n e e d e d to present the p a p e r . • N a m e , present connection, professional classification (chemist, chemical engineer, biochemist, physicist, e t c . ) , m e m b e r s h i p status, a n d address of each author.

NEW YORK CITY, SEPTEMBER 1963

• Indication of which a u t h o r will p r e s e n t the p a p e r .

General Papers

• Abstract of p a p e r . A s t a n d a r d abstract form you m a y use to submit your p a p e r was p u b l i s h e d in C&EX for April 2 3 ( p a g e s 70

and 77). Using this form will give all n e e d e d information. Abstracts tor regular p a p e r s should not exceed 200 words. For symposia p a p e r s and for some1 other invited p a p e r s , longer abstracts may b e n e e d e d . T o give readers t h e best service, as well as to conserve space, you are urged to k e e p these special abstracts to 350 words or less. H o w e v e r , w h e r e division regulations suggest a longer abstract, it will be a c c e p t e d in k e e p i n g with those regulations. T h e form is designed for a s t a n d a r d abstract of 200 words. If you need more space, please c o n t i n u e the abstract on a second, plain sheet. Some divisions also require a second, longer abstract, full p a p e r s , a n d or multiple copies of t h e s t a n d a r d abstract. Consult the individual division p r o g r a m s for such special instructions. C o m p l e t e d abstracts should be mailed to the person indicated in t h e individual p r o g r a m s .

What's the best way to control it? On-line? Off-line? Open loop? Closed loop? Will a control system help you improve your products, increase production, and reduce costs? There's no universal answer to the question. For many companies, computer control can improve analysis of operation, increase efficiency, and improve quality control, reduce instabilities and maintain requirements, and increase safety and profit. Already, a number of petroleum companies have installed IBM Control Systems. For example, at one refinery an IBM closed loop Control System is controlling one of the world's largest crude stills. Many other compxn!pc> nre carefully investigating

their specific requirements to determine what advantages various degrees of control offer. IBM's experienced system engineers would like to discuss your needs with you. If your process can be improved by computer control, these IBM system engineers will help you select exactly the 1710 Control System that best meets your specific requirements. For information, call your local IBM office or write to IBM Dept. 453, Monterey and Cottle Road, San Jose, California for new booklet: 1710 Control System for Petroleum Refining.

Rumford Medals

ACS Southwest Meeting

The Rumford Committee of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences welcomes nominations for candidates for the biennial Rumford Prize. The award is made (according to a letter from Count Rumford to the academy dated in July 1796) "to the author of the most important discovery or useful improvement . . . made . . . in any part of the Continent of America or in any of the American Islands . . . on Heat, or on Light." The committee has recognized contemporary extensions to the concepts of heat and light, such as the inclusion of the whole electromagnetic spectrum. Nominations should be sent to the committee at 280 Newton St., Brookline 46, Mass., not later than Sept. 20. Some previous winners of the medal include Robert Hare, 1839; Sir Humphry Davy, 1816; Michael Faraday, 1846; Louis Pasteur, 1856; Josiah Willard Gibbs, 1880; Irving Langmuir, 1920; Arthur Holly Compton, 1926; Peter Debye, 1930; Fritz Haber, 1932; and C. E. K. Mees, 1943.

The 18th Southwest Regional Meeting of ACS local sections will be held Dec. 6 to 8 in Dallas. Sponsors are the Dallas-Fort Worth Section and 13 other southwestern ACS sections. In addition to general sessions in the usual fields, symposia are planned in biomedical chemistry, chemical education, organic phosphorus chemistry, polymerization chemistry, process instrumentation, and surface phenomena. All interested ACS members are invited to participate. Contributed papers may be submitted to the program chairman, Dr. C. Gordon Peattie, Texas Instruments, Box 5474, Dallas 22, Tex. Information needed includes title, designation of author(s) and their affiliations (indicating which one will present the paper), presentation time required (10-25 minutes), a 200 word abstract, and indication of any unusual requirements for projection equipment, etc. Formal deadline for papers is Aug. 15, when at least a letter of intent must be filed.

International s y m p o s i u m on radiationinduced polymerization and graft co-

polymerization is being planned by Battelle Memorial Institute in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission's Division of Isotopes Development. It will be held Nov. 29 and 30 at Battelle.
