Prospectus 2003 Jon L. Holmes and Nancy S. Gettys Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI 53706
Our goal has always been to provide high quality instructional materials and help chemistry instructors at all levels use them effectively. In 2003 we will continue our efforts to provide simple, accessible ways for you to find out about the breadth and excellence of our materials. Of course, we rely on your feedback about your needs. Learn to Use JCE Video Would you like to learn more about JCE digitized video materials? Would you like to use them in your classroom? Are you organizing a meeting or conference where the participants might like to learn too? JCE has special Video Workshops to fill these needs—you can attend a workshop or host one. Read on… JCE staff conducts workshops on incorporating JCE Video into classroom presentations. During 2002 we were at the ACS Spring National Meeting in Orlando, at the Biennial Conference on Chemistry Education in Bellingham, WA, and at the AP Chemistry Exam Reading in Clemson, SC. The workshops focus on using video from our Chemistry Comes Alive! collection of CD-ROMs; the format can range from a three-hour hands-on session to an hour-long demonstration. We will present a similar workshop for any meeting or group of interested chemistry instructors as time and finances permit: just invite us! If you are unable to attend a workshop, you can access the materials we use in the workshops online at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/Workshops/JCEVideo/. If, after attending a workshop or working with the online materials, you would like to present a workshop yourself, we can help by providing materials and examples for your presentation, as well as information sheets, order forms, guest access to JCE Online, and other items for your workshop participants.
JCE Online: New Look, New Additions Check out JCE Software’s newly updated WWW pages at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/. We are in the process of updating them to match the new JCE Online style. All of our Web-ready publications (listed below) have online demonstration versions available, including the new 3rd edition of Periodic Table Live!, so you can try them out before you make a purchase. Each JCE Software publication has technical support and instructor’s notes online, providing you with information that will help you use them in your classroom. The Chemistry Comes Alive! (CCA!) area of the site (http:// jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/CCA/ ) has been updated to include Chemistry Comes Alive! Volume 6: Laboratory Techniques, the newest addition to the collection. The comprehensive table of contents, index, and search has been improved, so finding video on any topic from any CD in the collection now is even easier. Help us continue to improve our online presence by using it and telling us what is helpful and what needs further improvement. 222
Take Part in a Discussion Forum Participate (speak up! or simply observe) in one or more of our JCE Online discussion forums, a new feature of JCE Online at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/webx. The forums are a special feature of Only@JCE Online. One of these forums, on JCE Software, has discussion areas for all current JCE Software publications, both software and video. Here users can ask questions, answer questions, and share ideas and lessons using JCE Software publications. The discussions are monitored by JCE Software staff, who will answer technical questions and gather new ideas for improving JCE Software. What’s in Store in 2003?
More Chemistry Comes Alive! The CCA! series continues—look for at least one new Chemistry Comes Alive! CD to appear in 2003. Volume 7 will include video from the ChemDemos (1) and ChemDemos II (2) videodiscs that was not included on previous CCA! volumes, plus lots of new chemistry demonstrations. Each CD in the popular CCA! series contains video and animations of chemical reactions and procedures that can be easily incorporated into your own computer-based presentations, and each works on both Mac OS and Windows computers. New Editions A new 7th edition of General Chemistry Collection will ship in time for fall 2003 adoptions. It will include new programs for general chemistry in addition to the software included in the current 6th edition (3). The Advanced Chemistry Collection will be updated in fall 2003 and this 4th edition will be shipped in time for spring semester 2004. It will include new programs for advanced chemistry in addition to the software included in the current 3rd edition (4). New Releases In addition to the new programs above, we continue to work with authors and peer reviewers on larger packages that will be published individually on CD-ROM. We expect to publish at least one such CD in 2003. Watch the Journal and JCE Online for information. Connect with Your Students Outside Class Most students now own a personal computer. Many instructors utilize the World Wide Web to create HTML pages for their students. Campus-wide networks are providing broadband access to such resources. JCE Software has options available to take advantage of these developments: software adoptions, Web-ready publications, and customized CDs.

For large orders, the cost per CD can be quite low (as little as $3–5), making this a cost-effective method of allowing students access to the software they need—whenever and wherever they desire.
Use Our Web-Ready Publications Due to its many advantages, HTML has become a popular means to present material. Viewed with the ubiquitous Internet browser, HTML is compatible with both Mac OS and Windows, provides a flexible and familiar hypermedia interface, and is readily distributed via various media. Our Web-ready publications can be used by individuals directly from the CD-ROM. With appropriate licensing, they are also ready for use on local intranets and can be readily incorporated into other HTML-based materials. Visit us online at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/Programs/www.html for a demonstration preview of each Web-ready publication; contact us to learn about licensing them: •

Create a Custom CD Is no single JCE Software publication “just right” for your course? Would you like your students to have access to more than one or only parts of the items above? Do you need to keep the cost-per-student low? Just select content from among our Web-ready publications, and JCE Software can build a customized CD-ROM for you. You can also include your own computer software or electronic documents. CDs can be distributed to students bundled with a locally published laboratory manual, included as a part of student lab fees, or sold as a Student Affiliate or other organizational fund-raising project. Prices range from $3 to $8 per CD depending on
Most chemistry instructors use a computer in their teaching and many of you have created materials for your classes. If you have an original computer presentation, electronic document, animation, video, or other item that is not printed text, it is probably an appropriate submission for JCE Software. A guide for software and video submissions to JCE Software is online at http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/ Authors/. We especially invite presentations, lessons, and tutorials incorporating video and images from the CCA! series. If you publish your work in the Journal of Chemical Education, you will share your efforts with chemistry instructors and students all over the world—and receive professional recognition for your achievements as well.
