ABSTRACT The two hydroxy groups of 2,3-dihydroxypropylmethacrylate (1)were protected in the dioxolane methacrylate (2). Anionic polymerization of 2 was investigated form, (2,2-dimethyl-l,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl and a,o-dilithiooliin THF at -78 O C with 1,l-diphenylhexyllithium,l,l-diphenyl-3-methylpentyllithium, gostyrene in the presence or absence of LiCl as well as with 1,Cdisodio- and 1,4-dipotassio-1,1,4,4tetraphenylbutanes. The polymerizationof 2 proceededto give poly(2)quantitativelyin each caw. Particularly, lithio initiators with LiCl afforded the poly(2)sof predictable molecular weighta and of very narrow molecular weight distributions (M,IM,,
