CRC Handbook Series in Clinical Laboratory Science. Section B: Toxicology, Vol. 1. David Seligson and Irving Sunshine, Eds. 432 pages. CRC Press Inc., 2255 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. 33409. 1978. $54.95; outside U.S., $62.95 Reviewed by Merle A. Evenson, Dept. of Medicine, University of Wisconsin, 600 Highland Ave., Madison, Wis. 53792 This series in Clinical Laboratory Science is the first a t t e m p t by CRC to generate a multivolume handbook t h a t deals with the interdisciplinary nature of the clinical laboratory. T h e task of producing such a series is enormous, and the volume on toxicology is one of the first completed in the series. T h e book is intended as a source of literature and reference data for the analytical toxicologist. T h e subject matter areas are: gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, thin layer chromatography, immunochemical methods of drug analysis and microcrystal tests for toxicology. T h e r e are two tables—one on solubilities of antibiotics and another on melting points—that do not fit well with the rest of the subject matter of the book. This volume is directed toward the novice entering the field of chromatography. T h e brief descriptive materials t h a t introduce the tables of data are classical presentations of fundamental principles. Nearly half of the book is directed to gas chromatographic performance of numerous liquid phase packings, different derivatization reagents, and comparison of retention times of drugs over different columns. Most of the technical data is also available from manufacturers of gas chromatographic supplies. Most of the literature citations are old, late 1960s and early 1970s, while few are given after 1973. T h e thin layer chromatography section is well developed and contains several lists t h a t are obviously based upon vast experience. T h e liquid chromatographic section repeats some of the column chromatography performance information found in the gas chromatographic section. This section is rather brief b u t the application bibliography and the

Better protection for costly LC columns New pre-packed guard cartridges make columns last longer. Inserted before your analytical column, these handy disposable guard cartridges remove harmful particles and strongly adsorbed compounds better than ever before. With this protection, total column costs decline dramatically Unlike the old guard columns that you dry pack yourself with coarse particles, these cartridges are slurry packed with totally porous particles 10 Mm in diameter. They becomea high-efficiency extension of the analytical column. And they have about 10 times the su rface area and sample capacity of the old pack-it-yourself guard columns. The cartridges fit in a reusable holder and operate at pressures to 7000 psi. They are manufactured by Brownlee Labs and distributed in the U.S. by Rheodyne. Cartridges cost $36 each purchased in a pack of two. Reusable holder is $120. Get the details now Contact Rheodyne. Inc., 2809 Tenth St., Berkeley, CA 94710. Phone (415) 548-5374.
