Puzzles for Chemical People The professor pulls some financial hi-jinks.

During a coffee break, several Espesol chemists were discussing a post-grad course they were attending at the university night school. One recounted an experience of his professor's. The absent-minded (of course) professor set out to shop. On his way he discovered he had only 60 cents in his pocket. So he stopped at the bank and wrote a check for the exact amount of his intended purchases. The absent-minded (no relation) bank teller cashed the check but paid out dollars for the cents amount on the check...and cents instead of the dollar amount. Naturally the professor didn't notice, and completed his shopping. Back home he discovered he still had

cash left that was exactly the true amount of the check he wrote. Now, figure out for yourself what the correct amount of the check was. Butwhen itcomestoserious problems regarding chemicals and solvents, don't try to figure them out for yourself. Ask the man from Espesol. One of his jobs is to be your "reference library"on the latest products, techniques and services. Then his main concern is to assure you of a constant supply of cyclohexane, propylene, ethylbenzene, paraxylene, or any chemical or Espesol solvent you need. He offers superior, uniformly pure, competitively priced products to meet your most exacting specs. He also offers

a wealth of information and experience to help solve your particular formulating problem. Just ask him for answers. Speaking of answers, the professor should get the bank teller out of trouble by returning some cash. His check was only written for$20.40. Now, will you help us out of trouble? We need more puzzles. Our thanks for this one to D.R.Kasanofof New York,N.Y. But we need yours, too. Send it to PUZZLES, Signal Oil & Gas Co., P.0. Box 5008, Houston, Texas 77012.
