HE availability of the petroleum oils of high hydrogen content for fuel gas production and petrochemical uses has been greatly reduced in recent years by several factors. The dieselization of railroads and of much automotive transport, and the conversion of military aircraft to jet propulsion, have provided new consumers who can preempt the limiting supply of straight-run distillate oils ( 1 7 ) . Increased demand for highoctane gasoline for automotive purposes has led the petroleum refiner to utilize straight-run residual oils more fully. More recently, even the supply of low grade residual oils appears to be threatened by the development of more economical coking processes (
