Jeanette M. Van Emon is technical man ager/or the immunochemistry program at EPA. She received her B.S. degree in envi ronmental studies from California State University at Hayward and her Ph.D. in agricultural and environmental chemis try from the University of California at Davis. She received the joint EPA and ACS Science Achievement Award in Chemistry and the EPA Bronze Medal for her work in applying pesticide immunoas says to assess human exposure. She also was a co-organizer of the first ACS Sym posium on Immunochemical Methods for Environmental Analysis. Her research in terests include development of recombi nant antibodies, fate and transport of pes ticides, and toxicity of natural products.

Viorica Lopez-Avila is director of the Cal ifornia operations branch of Midwest Re search Institute. Since earning her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Tech nology in 1979, she has been involved in developing analytical methods to deter mine environmental pollutants. Recently she has been involved in the study of super critical fluid extraction (SFE) of organic compoundsfromsoils, and she plans to de velop field-screening methods that com bine SFE with immunoassays.
