Ralph L. Shriner retires from Chemical Reviews Dr. Ralph L. Shriner, visiting professor of chemistry at Southern Methodist University, will retire as editor of Chemical Reviews on December 3 1 , 1966. Dr. Shriner, who has been editor since 1950, will be succeeded by Dr. Harold Hart, professor of chemistry at Michigan State University (C&EN, Aug. 22, page 5 0 ) . A native of St. Louis, Dr. Shriner received a B.S. in 1921 from Washington University, St. Louis, and an M.S. in 1923 and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1925 from the University of Illinois. From 1925 to 1927, Dr. Shriner was a research associate at the N.Y. Agricultural Experiment Station. He returned to the University of Illinois in 1927 as assistant professor, becoming associate professor in 1930, and professor of organic chemistry in 1935. He remained there until 1941, when he went to the University of Indiana as professor of chemistry and chairman of the department. After five years at Indiana, Dr. Shriner joined the faculty of the University of Iowa as professor of organic chemistry and became head of the chemistry department in 1951. He accepted his present position in 1963. A member of the American Chemical Society since 1919, Dr. Shriner was a councilor of the Iowa Section in 1952-53, and was on the editorial board of the Journal of Organic Chemistry from 1952 to 1956. He received the James F. Norris Award of the Northeastern Section in 1962. Dr. Shriner is coauthor of Systematic Identification of Organic Com-

Dr. Alden H. Emery, former executive secretary of the American Chemical Society, has received the Milwaukee Section Award in appreciation for his "activities on behalf of local sections." The bronze award medallion was presented to Dr. Emery by special action of the Milwaukee Section's board of directors. It is usually given to a member or past member of the section. Dr. Emery, who joined the Society in 1923, became associated with the ACS staff as assistant manager in 1936, becoming secretary and business manager 10 years later. In 1947 he was named executive secretary, a position he held until 1965 when he became honorary secretary. He retired on July 1 of this year (C&EN, June 13, page 100).

Teaching award to Corr Daniel P. ("Doc") Corr, a chemistry teacher at Columbia High School, East Greenbush, has received the Eastern New York ACS Chemistry Teachers Award. Dr. Sidney Archer, chairman of the Eastern New York Section, presented the certificate and honorarium to Mr. Corr at the section's November meeting, held at the State University of New York, Albany campus. Mr. Corr was selected for his many years of teaching, for his activities as a department supervisor and consultant to the State Education Department, and for his leadership in the local teachers' association. He has been instrumental in organizing science fairs in his area, has conducted accelerated Regents classes, and has published chemistry and curriculum articles.
