Pages 1210-1215. Further kinetic and product data' have shown that in N2O5-NO3-NOZ-naphthalene-air mixtures, naphthalene does not react with the NO3radical, but suggest that naphthalene does react in the gas phase with N205,with a rate constant of -(2-3) X lo-'' cm3 molecule-' s-' at 298 f 1 K. This observation that naphthalene reacts with NZO5and not with the NO3 radical removes certain inconsistencies in our previous data. Thus, the rate constant we reported for naphthalene was significantly higherthan those for benzene or the mono-, biand trimethyl-substituted benzenes.2 However, since the NO3 radical reactions with the aromatic hydrocarbons appear to proceed via H-atom abstraction from the substituent methyl groups,2 it would be expected, based upon the similarity of the C-H bond energies in benzene and na~hthalene,~ that the rate constant for the reaction of NO3 radicals with naphthalene would be of a similar magnitude to that for benzene.
