Boehringer Ingelheim is pleased to announce Ronald J. Sorcek, a Senior Scientist in the Medicinal Chemistry Department at our Ridgefield, Connecticut site, is one of this year's recipients of the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Technical Achievements in Organic Chemistry Award. This award recognizes non-PhD professionals who make significant and ongoing contributions to the field of organic chemistry. Ron will present his scientific work at the 224th National Meeting of the ACS in Boston on August 18-22, 2002. Ron is the third Boehringer Ingelheim employee to receive this award in the past four years. Ron received his Master's degree in Organic Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where his thesis focused on the synthesis of ribose nucleosides as potential antiviral and antitumor agents. For more than 20 years, Ron has been a key contributor at Boehringer Ingelheim, where he has been involved with many different projects in the field of drug discovery and is recognized, in-house, as an expert in Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) studies and in the biology of inflammation. Ron's contributions to these fields are reflected in his extensive publication and proposal record. One of Ron's most exciting projects was the design of a back-up compound to Ontazolast, a substance from BIPI's research that reached phase II clinical trials for the treatment of asthma. As Ontazolast could only be delivered through inhalation, it was necessary to alter the structure to try to find derivatives that would allow the drug to be administered orally. "As a scientist, it was very challenging work and something to be proud of." said Ron. Ron's work has been recognized internally with a Boehringer Ingelheim Golden Achievement Award in 1997. Dr. Terence Kelly, Director of Medicinal Chemistry, wrote the nomination for the ACS Award. "Ron has set a standard for MS-level chemists in our organization," says Kelly. "His knowledge of both organic and medicinal chemistry is excellent and his work ethic is exemplary. Ron Sorcek is an example to other non-PhD chemists in that he demonstrates every day how excellent performance and career progression are not limited by formal education." Join us in applauding the achievements of Ron Sorcek. Achieve your own success by joining the inspired scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim who are committed to creating a healthier future.
