Search for Organic Contaminants in Water by Battelle An extensive search for potentially harmful organic contaminants in drinking water and advanced wastetreatment water is being conducted at Battelle's Columbus Laboratory for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The object of the $1.5 million, three-year study is to compare con­ taminants in advanced waste-treat­ ment plant water and in drinking water from five types of raw water supplies taken from selected regions of the country. The analysis of water will be performed in a series of steps consisting of an initial separation of the water concentrates into different types of organic compounds and then the identification of individual organic compounds. The researchers at Bat­ telle will be specifically searching for a number of known toxic substances such as TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) and PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls). Identification will be performed with a computerized, glass capillary GC/MS system. The system is de­ signed to match the unknown spectra with a collection of authentic refer­ ence samples of spectra. Once the presence of a potentially harmful com­ pound is confirmed, quantitative de­ termination will be carried out by the addition of internal standards and by a technique known as integration of specific ion current.
