1964 I N RETROSPECT At the end of the first year of collaboration between the Division of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry and I&EC Monthly, the progress made is very encouraging. More ACS members voted and participated in Division activities than ever before, even though the former Nuclear and Fluorine Chemistry Subdivisions have become full-fledged Divisions and have taken their members with them. The I&EC Division now has over 10,000 members with any subscriber to the Monthly automatically becoming a Division member. The Division page is now regularly available as a means of communicating with the members, and your response is solicited. Any correspondence may be sent directly to the officers or to the Editor of I&EC Monthly for transmission to the officers. M . Smith for the excellence of his presentation of the paper, “Adsorption Rate Studies-Significance of Pore Diffusion,” a t the 30th Annual Chemical Engineering Symposium, held at College Park, Maryland. The Division’s Scroll of Honor was awarded to Joseph Stewart for his contributions to the Division and to chemical technology. The symposia on Research Laboratory Operations and Putting Chemistry and Unit Operations back into the Training of Chemists and Chemical Engineers carried the Division into new areas of industrial and engineering chemistry. These symposia were characterized by a new format, designed to increase audience participation and to stimulate discussion. Informal discussion was also a feature of the combined dinner meetings and trips to a Philadelphia Space Facility and the Argonne National Laboratories. These popular activities will continue. Grass roots operations are being planned for 1965 in the form of new I&EC groups a t the local section and area levels, especially to catalyze student-faculty contact concerning training for industry. We would appreciate any Suggestions you may have for further activities a t both local and national levels. The Division and the Monthly I&EC will establish a members’ and subscribers’ service desk a t future ACS Meetings to permit you to become better acquainted with us and with each other and to provide a medium for informal exchange of ideas and comment, More details of these activities will appear on this page in the months to come.
