Our cover illustrates our REPORT, "Foundations of Modern Liquid Chromatography," by L. S. Ettre and C. Horvath, page 422 A. The design is based on a color drawing in the frontispiece of the book, "Chromatographic Adsorption Analysis," by Harold H. Strain, published in 1942 by Interscience. Represented is the separation of carotenes by adsorption of petroleum ether extracts of leaves on a magnesia column. At the top of the column are xanthophylls and chlorophylls; in the center, beta-carotene; and bottom, alpha-carotene. Strain himself was a pioneer in the introduction of modern liquid chromatography in the U.S. In the REPORT, modern liquid chromatography is shown to have evolved from pioneering activities on the art of chromatography in the 1930's and 1940's and from the development of the theory of chromatography in the 1940's and 1950's. These historical developments are placed in the scientific and political perspectives of the times.
