detail, although it would appear here that many of these consist of manu facturers' tests and standard methods might be used to equal advantage. The section on chemical reactions is rather cursory, but many of the reactions of the materials are noted. The section on polymerization is, in most cases, too brief to be of any particular value, and, in some cases, antiquated methods of procedure are described. It is noticeable that the references are predominantly early references, and few references since 1945 are noted. Undoubtedly, this collection of pam phlets will be of service in obtaining in formation on the properties and be havior of the monomers. It is felt that more rigid editing and elimination of obsolete material would have strength ened their utility. P. O. POWERS

"Report of Research and Technologic Work on Explosives, Explosions, and Flames, Fiscal Years 1947 and 1948," Bureau of Mines Report of Investiga tions 4502 sets forth results of studies on the explosibility of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, the hazards of industrial gases, vapors, and dusts, and improved methods of rock dusting to prevent the spread of coal dust explosions. Following these studies, eight new explosives have been added to the approved list, making a total of 191 explosives and 9 blasting devices which may be used in coal mines. Investigation of the Texas City, Tex., explosion reflected that while it is diffi cult to detonate ammonium nitrate by ordinary impact or friction, under en closed conditions it can be exploded by heat alone. Explosion hazards of more than 175 dust samples were determined, including bituminous coal and lignite dust, graph ite, insecticides, soap powders, peni cillin, wood flour, corn starch, wheat, sulfur, cork, and plastics. Information is also set forth on the explosion hazards of perchloric acid. Free copies of the report are available from the Bureau of Mines, Publications Section, 4800 Forbes Street, Pittsburgh 13, Pa. Requests must specify the full title and the report number as set forth above.
