Separation of Thulium and Ytterbium in Acidic Chloride Solutions by Fractional Solvent Extraction. A correlation based on laboratory data was developed for predicting the total distribution coefficient. This was then used in an extraction calculation for Yb-Sm separation and the results checked by simulated column runs in the laboratory.

Experimental Determination of Catalyst Fouling Parameters. Diffusivities. T h e diffusivities of Ar/He mixtures in fouled catalysts have been measured as a function of carbon concentration. T h e results show that even though the diffusivity decreases, the Thiele modulus is constant as carbon deposition proceeds.

Sulfur Oxidation of Oleflns to Ketones. Ca-Cil linear and cyclic olefins \\ere oxidized to ketones in one step using sulfur as an oxidant. Ketone yields were 40-50 mol yoper pass. Main by-products were mercaptans and sulfides, which were recyclable, thereby bringing the overall ketone yield to 80-90 mol %.

Growth and Nucleation Rates of Ice Produced in a Well-Stirred Continuous Crystallizer. Good agreement is found a t larger crystal sizes between growth rates inferred from effluent particle size distributions measured at subcoolings of 0.02°-0.030C and values predicted from transpoi t rates. Nucleation rates are coirelated with the moments of the particle size distribution.

Rate and equilibrium data for adsorption of ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene butane, and butylene on a synthetic zeolite, Davison 5A calcium microtraps were obtained. Equilibrium isotherms were of the Langmuir type. Analysis of the rate data indicates that macropore transport is limiting.

Heterogeneous Potassium Catalyst. Role of the Substrate on the Propylene Dimerization Process. Magnesia, alumina, magnesium silicate, charcoal, molecular sieve, and graphites were evaluated as substrates for potassium catalyst in the dimerization of propylene. These substrates strongly affected the initiation, dimerization, and isomerization steps.

Permeability of Beds of Ice Particles. Porosities and permeabilities of beds of ice particles produced in a continuous \cell-stirred crystallizer are a strong function of method of bed formation. T h e permeabilities are five to eight times smaller than those obtained from uniform spheres of similar surface to volume ratio.

Theoretical Analysis of K Charts. Equilibrium ration charts are traditionally developed empirically from experimental data. A theoretical basis of K charts is established, and the derived equations impose certain limitations on the accuracy and reliability of these charts. Conclusions are supported by experimental data.

Electrolytic Production of Aminoguanidine Bicarbonate. T h e electrolytic reduction of nitroguanidine to aminoguanidine has been studied with a rotating cathode of mild steel having a deposit of zinc in a supporting electrolyte of 30% aqueous solution of ammonium sulfate. T h e reduction proceeds with high-current efficiency (85%) and an isolated yield of 80%. T h e results on a 300 A cell are discussed.
