Only spark source spectrometry could reveal the difference Two billets of supposedly identical Nickel Alloy produced by the same manufacturing process were subjected to routine physical tests. One was satisfactory, the other for no apparent reason cracked at high temperature. Yet in a survey analysis of the billets, emission spectroscopic and chemical analyses showed no difference between the two. A comparison of their mass spectra however, obtained in less than an hour by the MS7 spark source Mass Spectrometer, showed a significant difference in the lead content. In the satisfactory billet the lead concentration was 24 ppm ; in the unsatisfactory billet it was 110 ppm. With the MS7 impurities can be measured down to 0.001 ppm, and all solid elements are covered simultaneously. An analyst can learn in a few days to operate the MS7 and interpret his results.
