Chemical residues, strands of fiber, samples as small as 1 m m . wide by 4 mm. long can be analyzed by infra red without special sample prepara tion using this micro unit. Attenu ated total reflectance analysis is ac complished by internally reflecting a beam of radiation from the contact faces of two materials that are in con tact with each other. The transfer of energy between the two is roughly proportional to the ratio of the indices of refraction. The refractive index of a material changes at wavelengths at which absorption bands occur thus producing a spectrum similar to a conventional absorption spectrum.
