flections u p to l / 1 0 in. without loss of sealing action, the company says. The joint makes use of a metal gasket—copper, aluminum alloy, or stainless steel—which is compressed between interlocking male and female flanges. A coupling puts pressure on the flanges which forces them together. If vibration should move the flanges apart, the gasket, under compression, remains seated, so that the joint is sealed. The Conoseal comes in three different operating ranges: low, medium, and high. These correspond to temperature ranges of —300° to 750°, 1000 c , and 1800° F . Maximum room-temperature pressure for the 3 in. size in these ranges is 1200, 3300, and 6000 p.s.i. The joints come in sizes to fit tubes from 1 to 12 in. in diameter.

* Hot and Cold Film Tester Makes Debut An apparatus for studying minimum film-forming temperatures of emulsions, emulsion paints, and other coatings has its first public showing. Paint chemists, in town for the Philadelphia convention of the Federation of Paint and Varnish Production Clubs, stop at Rohm & Haas to look at the unit. The apparatus maintains a temperature gradient along paint strips from the frost-covered zone in the test bed at right to a hot zone at left. The two-handled Plexiglas cover at left is placed over the test bed for controlled-humidity tests; the black box holds temperature and humidity recorders. The unit is now under study by an instrument firm considering commercial production of a modified prototype.

Rockets Bring New Gear N e w material, coupling for rockets a n d missiles have potential industry market A . GOOD BIT OF EQUIPMENT and

mate-

rial is being developed and manufactured these days with rockets and missiles in mind. But industry offers a good potential market for some of these too. One such is a high temperature material—Astrolite—developed by H. I. Thompson Fiber Glass for such uses as rocket engine and nozzle liners, missile nose cones, and heat shields.

The material is a combination of vitreous silica fibers and a phenolic resin binder. Making comparison tests at 4500° F., the company found that Astrolite has a burn-through time over three times longer than steel of the same thickness. And only one pound of the material will give a burn-through time equal to 15 pounds of steel, the company says. ÎTube Coupling. Another piece of equipment developed for rocket use, but with industry potential, is the Conoseal tubing joint, made by Aeroquip. With this coupling, dissimilar metals can be joined and used at high temperatures and pressures with linear de-

A new device to count and measure fog particles has been developed at the Army Chemical Center. Invented by Martin Memolo, a Chemical Center engineer, the counter will be used to study chemical fogs and other fine particle matter. But, the Army feels, the device may also have industrial uses. The counter is portable, electronically operated, and semiautomatic. With it, one man can measure and record with one hand at an average rate of 3300 particles an hour, the Army says. Using electronic calipers, the operator measures greatly magnified particle images flashed on a screen and presses a foot pedal. This sends an electrical message to a series of small meters which record the number of each size counted. There are completely automatic counters of higher performance available, Memolo says, but these were not suitable since they couldn't distinguish between droplets of moisture and other kinds of particles.

• Fast camera shutter, developed by Electro-Optical Systems, takes photos with an effective exposure time of 5 X 10- 9 second, the company says. The camera can be used to study intense explosions, ultra-high speed Shockwaves, and special nuclear reactions. Heart of the camera is a hermetically sealed, large aperture, wide angle Kerr cell shutter with no moving parts. It is pulsed electronically to get the photographs. Ε1 DEC.
