ROHM & HAAS ALKYLPHENOLS low price, high reactivity, many applications The following are only a few of the reactions and application possibilities of octylphenol and nonylphenol:

Γ The alkylphenols can be reacted with acetylene in the presence of organic zinc or cadmium salts to yield polymeric ethylidene phenols. (CH3C00)2Zn CH—-> 170-220°C 200 psi

L

Dimeric and polymeric alkylphenol sulfides and disulfides may be prepared by reacting alkylphenols with sulfur dichloride or sulfur monochloride.

Compounds of this type have been cited as adhesives and autoadhesion additives.

The condensation of alkylphenols with formalde hyde or other aldehydes in the presence of an acidic catalyst gives thermoplastic polymers.

Such polymers exhibit good oil solubility and water resistance and may be used as tackifiers for syn thetic rubber, vulcanizing agents for Butyl rubber, and as coating resins.

The use of these compounds or their alkaline metal derivatives as oxidation and corrosion inhibitors and as detergents for fuel oils has been reported widely.

Regulated halogenation of the alkylphenols results in the formation of 2-halo- and 2,6-dihaloalkylphenols. OH

Both the mono- and dihalogenated octylphenols have been reported as germicides and disinfectants. Polyoxyalkylene phenolic ethers are formed by the alkaline catalyzed reaction of alkylphenols with alkylene oxides. CeHi7

This reaction by which controlled hydrophilelipophile balance can be obtained is the basis for the preparation of a variety of surface-active agents.
