ROSCOE E. DAVIS Roscoe E. Davis, for three decadesin the chemistry department a t Lane Technical High School, first as teacher and later as head, died May 4th a t the age of sixty-two years. He graduated from the University of Chicago, and spent his life in the idealistic pursuit of his calling. He had a deep interest in teaching, and was one of the most active members of the local educational group of the American Chemical Society, in the effort to extend its scope so as to aid in solving the problems of high-school chemistry teachers, and to form a bond between the objectives of high-school and college teaching. As a member of the National Committee on High-Schwl Chemistry during the past two years he co,ntributed to the development of the proposed high-school courses which will be further brought out this summer a t the workshop of Western Reserve University. He was co-author with B. S. Hopkins, M. V. McGill, G. M. Bradbury, and H. R. Smith of a textbook of high-school chemistry entitled, "Chemistry and You" (Lyons and Carnahan, 1939). Retiring and unassuming by nature, he yet exerted a profound influence upon those who were associated with him, either as students or colleagues. His death is a real loss to American education.
