RUDE oil pipelines have t o b e cleaned occasionally because paraffin and other materials build up i n s i d e the p i p e ; s l o w d o w n the flow of oil.

A lot of different types o f scrapers and a lot of different materials w e r e tried. But s o m e o f them w o r e t o o fast — others s w e l l e d or changed shape o r just fell apart. T h e n the scraper in the picture w a s built. It's a series o f discs made of H Y C A R , mounted o n a metal core. I n the picture it's just finished o n e of its many 3 6 - m i l e trips through a Cali­ fornia pipeline. It w o r k s fine, and w i l l k e e p o n w o r k i n g fine, because
