founded in 1949

by

the American Chemical Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data in special areas of topical interest that could not be accommodated in the Society's journals. It provides a medium for symposia that w o u l d otherwise be fragmented because their papers w o u l d be distributed among several journals or not published at all. Papers are reviewed critically according to A C S editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of A C S publications. Volumes in the A D V A N C E S I N C H E M I S T R Y S E R I E S maintain the

integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as well as reviews, because symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

degrees in organic chemistry from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, and his B.S. degree in chemistry from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. H e is an R & D Fel­ low at the B F Goodrich Company, Research and Development Center, Brecksville, Ohio. H e has served as research scientist or R & D manager for N e w Products Research and Development, B F Goodrich Company, for more than 21 years. H e has presented more than 20 technical papers and owns more than 20 patents on the synthesis and application of telechelic poly­ mers, including rubber-toughened or rubber-modified thermosets and hydrophilic polymers. His latest research is in the synthesis, characteriza­ tion, engineering, and performance evaluation of impact modifiers for thermosets and engineering thermoplastics. His research interests include correlating dynamic thermomechanical properties to the failure mechanisms of impact-modified thermosets and thermoplastics. In 1983 he coorganized the first international symposium on "Rubber-Modified Thermoset Resins" at the 186th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering, Washington, D C , August 28-September 2, 1983. In 1984 he coedited Rubber-Modified Thermoset Resins, Advances in Chemistry Series, Volume 208, American Chemical Society, Washington, D C . In 1987 he organized the second international symposium on "RubberToughened Plastics" at the 194th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineer­ ing, N e w Orleans, Louisiana, August 31-September 4,1987.

A Tribute to JohnA.Manson 1928-1988 Following his education at McMaster Univer­ sity and the University of Michigan and an industrial position with the A i r Reduction Company, John Manson joined the faculty of Lehigh University i n 1967. There he enjoyed an incredibly rich technical career. H e authored more than 160 scientific papers i n diverse fields that involved interactions with faculty from four different academic depart­ ments and two research centers at Lehigh University. In 1983 he was corecipient of Lehigh U n i ­ versity's L i b s e h A w a r d for outstanding research achievement. H i s interactions with international colleagues from England, France, Italy, Columbia, Czecho­ slovakia, and his homeland, Canada, are truly impressive. John Manson coauthored two books, several critical reviews, and numerous encyclope­ dia articles that represent seminal contributions to the fields of polymer composites, acid-base interactions, polymer fatigue, polymer blends and composites, and polymer concrete. A day with John Manson may be likened to a stroll through a grove of giant redwoods. The air was always fresh and clear from his extraordi­ nary intellectual honesty and respect for the views of his students and colleagues. His logic and thought processes were as strong and true as the trunks of these great specimens of nature. John's tree will grow no more, but its growth rings will bear permanent witness to his many contributions to so many of us. It will serve us well to periodically review his record as w e rededicate our efforts to train the minds of our students and push back the frontiers of the unknown. R.W. Professor Manson fought hard against his cancer. H e was writing an article entitled "Fatigue Crack Propagation in Rubber-Modified Epoxies and Polyacetal" for this book when he passed away. I truly regret that I could not include Professor Manson s chapter in this book.
