A plasticizer for every purpose"

SAFETY Electronic Fire D e t e c t o r W o r k s Rapidly, Can Be Used Outdoors An improved electronic fire detector system has been developed by Elec tronics Corp. of America. T h e com pany says it is the only detection de vice that can b e used satisfactorily out doors. Other systems currently used are thermal, a n d strong winds tend to prevent heat from reaching t h e thermalsensitive element. Detection is said to be rapid; in a test fire in a waste paper basket, t h e system, called Fireye, sounded t h e alarm in 8 second s. The detector h a s been used in a n u m b e r of chemical processing plants, including a nitro processing plant, a hydrogénation plant, and a plastics molding plant. The system features a miniature, rugged, photoconductive cell developed by E C A engineers for the purpose of fire detection. By resistance changes, the cell indicates t h e varying amounts of radiation emitted b y a flame: specifically, it detects the flicker which distinguishes flames from constant infrared radiation such as lamps and h e a t process, according to E C A . T h e radiation from the flame causes a pulsating signal t o be transmitted t o the control p a n e l , actuating the fire warning and extinguishing system. The Fireye system can detect a fire from reflected and direct radiation, as well as from radiation transmitted through glass.

You will find ADIPOL ODY an excellent primary plasticizer for most resins. I t imparts permanent flexibility and a low temperature flexibility of - 7 0 ° F . (Commercial Standard 192-53, Impact Test)* to finished products. Other properties to be obtained b y your using ADIPOL ODY are low water extraction, heat stability, good U-V light stability and good hand. EXTRUSIONS: In such items as vinyl garden hose ADIPOL ODY has found wide acceptance for its excellent properties. PLASTISOLS: ADIPOL ODY produces plastisols with low initial viscosity, excellent shelf life, low temperature flexibility, high resilience, good heat and light stability, and imparts pseudoplastic flow properties. Technical data and samples will be sent immediately upon request without obligation.

E a c h unit of the system has a 100-ft. fire detection coverage, that is, it detects a l-sq.-ft. fire at a distance of 100 ft. In an earlier detection system developed b y one of ECA's predecessor companies, only six detectors could be used in a single area, each capable of protecting a maximum of 1600 sq. ft. T h e n e w system can use as many as 20, each protecting u p to 5000 sq. ft. Average cost of t h e new equipment is about 1 cent per sq. ft., according to ECA, S1 Three Booklets Present Plans For C o n t r o l of Disasters Steps for prevention and control of emergency disaster situations in plants a n d places of public assembly are presented in three booklets prepared by the Association of Casualty and Surety Companies. "Before Disaster Strikes" presents a plan of organization for disaster control a n d describes t h e duties of each memb e r of t h e organization. Designed principally for larger plants, it is easily adaptable t o any size group. v "Fire Control" is an extensively revised m a n u a l presenting in greater detail accepted procedures for handling; fire protection equipment and methods:, of preventing industrial fires. I t ineludes a comprehensive table on extinguishers which provides all the dat&required to use them effectively. "Panic a n d Its Control" covers na—
