RALPH L. SHRINEB, State University

of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. This is an interesting little book by an enthusiastic teacher of organic chemis try. The author utilizes the standard sequence of tests for characterizing organic compounds; no new techniques are introduced. The author has incor porated into his book definite and specific ideas concerning the scientific method. The importance of experi ment, observation, and deduction is emphasized throughout all the usual sequence of identification steps—viz., appearance, odor, ignition test, physical constants, elementary analysis, solu bility, preliminary, and special tests for structural features and preparation of derivatives (which the author prefers to call "identification compounds"). Even the chapters are given titles to emphasize the importance of logical scientific procedure. The discussion of general properties of various types of organic compounds and suggested iden tification of specific classes of com pounds is written so as to stimulate the student to reason and think logically about his work. No exact procedures for preparing derivatives or tables of physical constants of compounds are given—the student must do this him self in the library. Numerous pertinent quotations from famous chemists, philosophers, authors, politicians, humorists, and historians are given at chapter headings and in footnotes (Chaucer, John Read, Free man, Josh Billings, Conan Doyle, Aesop, Mills, Moncrieff, Rhodes). These are delightful reading. Teachers of chemistry will enjoy reading this little book and should absorb some of the enthusiasm of the author for the scientific method. How ever, the price is out of proportion to the size of the book, even with due allowance for inflation. WATCH FOR. . .
