Moisture Monitor

This Chemist has more time for Valuable Research thanks to the SCHLUMBERGER NMR Analyzer The remarkable simplicity of the Schlumberger Model 104 NMR Analyzer allows routine moisture determination by non technical personnel, freeing the chemist from humdrum labor and giving him more time for creative work. Nothing approaches the speed and accuracy of this new form of spectrography based on the principle of nuclear magnetic resonance. Once the instru ment is set up, just put in a sample, throw a switch, and read a scale—in less than a min ute your moisture determination is finished. The wide range of operational parameters of the Model 104 makes it, in the hands of a research chemist, a sophisticated analytical instrument for probing the make-up of matter. Schlumberger NMR analysis is non destructive, and the large, 40-cc sample size allows high sampling accuracy. Results are reproducible to within parts per thousand, and accuracy of 0.1 %, absolute, can be main tained. Industries where large numbers of moisture determinations are necessary can save considerably through the release of tech nical personnel for more valuable research with the very same instrument. The Type 26-302 moisture monitor introduced by Consolidated Electrody namics Corp. measures minute quanti ties of water in gaseous mixtures. It measures accurately, according to the company, down to 10 p.p.m. full scale. And it permits meter readings over the range zero to 20,000 p.p.m. by means of a six-position attenuator. Output can be telemetered to a remote recorder for monitoring or control. In operation, an electrolysis cell con tinuously absorbs and electrolyzes all water present in a sample stream. A d.c. voltage is applied to the elements of the cell and the electrolysis current measured with a multirange meter. The electrolysis current, related di rectly to the mass rate of flow of water into the instrument, is an indication of water content. The instrument operates on 50/60 cycles, 105/125 volts, and normal line transients are said not to affect opera tion. Sample flow, at temperatures up to 100° C. and pressures of 10 to 40 p.s.i.g., are controlled at a selectable rate of· about 20 cc./min. A battery pack permits use where electric power is not available. P-22

Shadow Indicating Scale A gradient and calibration system of new design and assuring true linearity of calibration is a feature claimed for Pennsylvania Scale Co.'s Model 501 Pennograph. Gradient is supplied by two temperature compensated coil ten sion springs mounted in opposition on equal lever arms from the lever ful crum point. The springs, having a large number of coils and large outside diameter, are designed so that each coil deflects only a minute amount. This, as opposed to ordinary flat leaf flex design, assures a true linearity of cali bration, according to the company. The scale comes in five models with capacities from 100 grams to 1500 grams, and can be supplied in the metric or avoirdupois system. Sensi tivity is said to be 50 mg. to 400 mg, depending on the model chosen. The company also says the scale has an im proved optical system which eliminates parallax and provides easier reading of values. P-23
