Books Proceedings of the 5th European Symposium on Polymer Spectroscopy. D. O. Hummel, Ed. xi + 332 pages. Verlag Chemie International, 175 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10010. 1979. $51.80
This volume presents papers delivered at the 5th European Symposium on Polymer Spectroscopy held in Cologne, Germany, in September 1978. Results from the use of a combination of spectroscopic methods are used to demonstrate the advantages of an integrated approach over any single method. Other chapters cover computer-assisted vibrational spectroscopy and the use of vibrational spectroscopy to determine the state of order in polymers. Rapid-scanning Fouriertransform IR spectroscopy is discussed, along with its application to the characterization of chemical and physical changes of polymer structure. Other techniques employed in these polymer studies include circular dichroism and optical rotatory dispersion, 1 : , C-NMR spectroscopy, pyrolysis-electron impact-mass spectrometry and high resolution N M R spectroscopy.
Continuing Series Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy: Applications to Chemical Systems, Vol. 2. J. R. Ferraro and L J. Basile, Eds. xi + 321 pages. Academic Press, Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1979. $32
This second volume contains seven chapters. T h e authors are scientists currently very active in the areas they discuss. T h e applications include studies of reacting and transient systems; air pollution, including a discussion of ground-based sensing of source emissions; surface analysis; and planetary atmospheres. Other chapters cover liquid chromatography detection using FT-IR, and the problems involved in quantitative FT-IR. Analytical Profiles of Drug Substances, Vol. 8. Klaus Florey, Ed. x + 558 pages. Academic Press, Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1979. $28
This is the eighth volume in a series intended to supplement the information about drugs available in the official compendia. T h e comprehensive descriptions include the physical, chemical, and analytical characteristics of the drug substances. Seventeen different drugs, including aspirin, erythromycin, neomycin and valproic acid, are covered in this volume.
