SD's fixed-bed vapor-phase process for the direct oxi dation of benzene by air is now being used in 17 plants in 8 countries, representing almost two-thirds of the world's maleic anhydride production. The special catalyst and reaction system developed by Scientific Design permits high rates of oxidation of benzene, and results in the highest known yield of prod uct. The recovery and refining systems enable superior process efficiency and eliminate undesirable product
properties. Maleic anhydride to the most exacting speci fications can be produced molten, briquetted, or pastillized. For future flexibility, the SD maleic anhydride plant can be readily converted to the production of phthalic anhydride.
