Split Bed Adsorbents Produce High Purity Hydrogen from NH3 at Ambient Temperature New Brochure Describes Multi-Functional Family of SYLOID® Silicas Davison's newest brochure, "Family of SYLOID® Silicas at Work," describes over 20 grades of micron-sized silicas used in a myriad of commercial applica tions by a growing cross section of industry, including adhesives, cosmetics, food, ink, paint, paper, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and chemical specialties. Technical information is provided to assist the reader in the evaluation and selection of the correct grade of SYLOID silica for a particular appli cation. Also included are the chemical and physical properties, moisture ad sorption capacities of the various grades, and particle size range by grade designation. An application chart shows the multi functional aspects of SYLOID sili cas which in most applications per form two or more functions by the addition of a single grade. In addition, an application guide and list of tech nical literature available covering spe cific applications is included. For your copy of this brochure, simply check the coupon below.

A hydrogen production plant in West Palm Beach, Florida is yielding 99.999 plus percent pure hydrogen for the National Cylinder Gas Division of Chemetron Corporation with the help of a combination bed of Davison silica gel and molecular sieve adsorbents. The unit, designed and built by Chemical Design, Inc. of Lockport, New York, produces high purity hy drogen by removing nitrogen from disassociated ammonia. To protect the bed of molecular sieves, a buffer bed of Davison silica gel adsorbs trace quantities of water and ammonia, which would reduce the nitrogen adsorption capacity of the molecular sieves. The special acid resistant qualities of buffer grade silica gel combined with its high pore volume and corre

spondingly smaller pore area enable the gel to adsorb any entrained liquid water without danger of decrepitation. After the removal of contaminants by the buffer bed, the stream passes through the bed of Davison molecular sieves where the nitrogen content is re duced from 25 percent to less than 10 ppm. This operation, which is accom plished on six minute cycles, uses a heatless pressure swing for reactiva tion, all at ambient temperature. The high capacity of Davison silica gel and the selective adsorption capa bilities of Davison molecular sieves combined in series are producing ex tremely pure hydrogen in an efficient operation.
