Within a little more than a fort night, a l o t of A C S members will b e s i n g i n g "Auld Lang Syne." W e h o p e that e a c h of you will have a pleasant N e w Year's celebration, that 195S lias b e e n kind to all. and tlnit e v e n better fortunes will b e forthcoming in H)59. At the year's e n d . certain business matters w h i c h occur o n an a n n u a l basis d e m a n d individual attention. Certain obligations must b e met, s u c h as t h e p a y m e n t of the Christmas hills. In this c o n n e c t i o n may w e ask. "Have y o u sent your 1 9 5 9 ACS membership d u e s payment?" T h o u s a n d s will he able to answer this question with a resounding "Yes." Certain others will have forgotten; s o m e will h a \ e postponed pay ment t o a fixed and personally more convenient date. A f e w , very f e w , may n e \ er in tend to continue their m e m b e r s h i p . Realistically w e must admit that each year a f e w m e m b e r s logically sever their c o n n e c t i o n with the A C S . O u r next question then is "If it i s absolutely necessary t o resign from t h e American ( 'hemical Society this year, have y o u mailed a resignation t o headquarters?" If not, w e remind you that resignations must b e received in this office before D e c . 31 if they are to he a c c e p t e d for 1959. N o w that w e h a v e reminded y o u w h e n to resign, if such action is neces sary, w e immediately follow b y e n couraging y o u not to sever your c o n n e c tion. T h e American Chemical Society currently is faced with many challeng ing p r o b l e m s . Solution d e m a n d s a united professional front It will b e more certain if the Society can d e p e n d u p o n support from a large majority of professional chemists and c h e m i c a l e n gineers. Financial support is important. Abilitv to speak and t o act f o r a signifi cant proportion of chemists and chemi cal engineers is necessary. Also, t h e Society h a s a broad program of activi ties m u c h of which can he carried out only b y individual members through out the country. YOUR support is important! T h r o u g h local sections a n d divisions there are m a n y jobs to he done. If y o u h a v e s o m e special interest, such as working w i t h secondary school s c i e n c e
students, most local sections will b e glad t o h a v e another h e l p i n g hand. If you h a v e a flair for public relations a c tivities, t h e local organization will w e l c o m e v o n with o p e n anns. Many of the divisions h a v e similar projects. Whatever your interest may b e . it is al most certain that it c a n b e u s e d s o m e where in t h e total A C S program. If you can't find the exact niche in w h i c h you c a n serve t h e Society best, w e shall be glad to assist you in getting started in service to t h e profession through a n \ C S project. May w e suggest, therefore, that in stead of resigning y o u think about i n creasing your volunteer activities to your profession. Submit your d u e s now a n d at t h e same time tell us h o w you w o u l d like to servo your profession. W e w ill call this to the attention of t h e organization within t h e Society w h i c h can use your talents to the best a d v a n tage.
Employment Aids W e are not a c c u s t o m e d to printing testimonials but it is our desire t o p u b licize services to members. In t h e latter spirit, w e q u o t e extensively from a recent letter to t h e Regional E m ployment Clearing H o u s e . "'My records filed with y o u on or about June 2 2 , 1 9 5 S , should n o w b e withdrawn. 1 will reach a final deci sion this week b e t w e e n t w o very satis factory positions. "1 w a s also registered w i t h t h e E C H at t h e C h i c a g o m e e t i n g . O u t of 3 0 interviews, there are at least 12 w h e r e a mutual interest w a s established. It was during this week that e m p l o y m e n t offers from earlier negotiations b e g a n to arrive, and I a m so c o m p l e t e l y satis fied with the t y p e of work offered that it w o u l d be pointless to pursue t h e Chicago contacts. "The present E C H operation s e e m s eminently suited to its i n t e n d e d pur pose." Other well-qualified persons m i g h t find this service as helpful as t h e writer of the foregoing. A.H.E.
