Select your Chlorinating Agent from these Hooker Chlorides depending upon ratio of acid Tfciionyl Chloride.

Here are five Hooker Chlorides t h a t are being widely used in Chlorination reactions. Their application is s o widespread t h a t we can o n l y touch briefly here on a few of their uses in organic s y n t h e s i s .

Sfuljxir Bichloride, SCI2, is used as a chlorinating a g e n t a n d in these reactions m a y be considered t h e equivalent of chlorine dissolved in soilfur nionochloride. I t reacts with soAXA

use of t h e s e chlorides. T h e sulfur chlorides which h a v e a ready source of chlorine are ideal chlorinating a g e n t s w i t h t h e added a d v a n t a g e s of ease of handling and storage and of low cost. Phosgene (Carbonyi C h l o r i d e ) , COCI2, is t h e acid chloride of carbonic acid. W i t h alcohols it forms either chlorformates or carbonates. W i t h a m i n e s it forms chioramides, s u b s t i t u t e d ureas or isocyanates. I t enters into m a n y Friedel-Craîts s y n t h e s e s w i t h aromatics to prod u c e acid chlorides or aryl k e t o n e s . I t m a y also a c t a s an a g e n t for direct chlorination· With m e t a l l i c oxides a n d sulfides, it gives a n h y drous chlorides. Reacting with organic acids it has been u s e d t o m a k e acid chlorides and a n h y d r i d e s .
