Editorial Selected Papers from the 7th International Conference on the Crystal Growth of Organic Materials The special section in this issue features selected papers from the 7th International Conference on the Crystal Growth of Organic Materials (CGOM), which was held at The University of Rouen on August 27-31, 2006. The conference followed from previous CGOM meetings held in Scotland (2003), England (1999), Germany (1996 and 1994), Scotland (1992), and Japan (1990), attracting 150 delegates from 18 different countries. A total of 52 oral and 39 poster presentations were given throughout the 5 days. The workshop followed the previous tradition of the CGOM series in that it sought to pull together results and ideas on both fundamental and applied aspects of crystallization science as well as to promote emerging theory, application areas, and technology. It covered all aspects associated with the crystallization of organic compounds: nucleation and crystal growth; methods for sensing, monitoring, and control; development of new crystallization processes and crystal characterization techniques; solid-state aspects, including morphology, polymorphism, solvates, and cocrystals; protein crystallization and biomineralization; chirality and enantiomeric resolution; understanding the effect of growth environment, including additives, impurities, and solvent choice; and physical organic chemistry, including solution properties, phase diagrams, etc. This wide range of themes illustrates the broad interdisciplinary approach adopted in this meeting such as favoring and facilitating a “cross seeding” of ideas and approaches between the different areas, not to mention bringing together delegates with different horizons from both academia and industry. Workshop attendees, drawn from a wide range of industries, including pharmaceutical, cosmetics, fine-chemical, dyes/pigments, analytical technologies, materials with special optical properties, etc., were provided with unrivalled opportunities for sharing experiences and extracting maximum synergy. The CGOM8 meeting, to be held in The Netherlands (Maastricht, September 2008) as part of the next International Symposium of Industrial Crystallization (ISIC2008), can be expected to provide a sound foundation for the developments within this rapidly expanding area of crystal science and engineering.
