A solid Ion palr material produced from 2,4,6-tri-2-pyrldlnyi1,3,5-trlazlne-tetraphenylborate on naphthalene provides a very simple, rapld, and economical method for the preconcentratlon of Iron from large volumes of whlsky, beer, and natural water samples. Iron Is quantitatively retained on thls adsorbent in the pH range 3.3-7.0 and at a flow rate of 1-8 mL/mln. The soild mass conslstlng of the metal complex along wlth naphthalene is dlssolved from the column with 5 mL of dimethylformamide (DMF). The absorbance is measured at 597 nm with a spectrophotometer agalnst the reagent blank. Beer's law Is obeyed over the concentratlon range 0.2-8.0 pg of iron In 5 mL of the final DMF solutlon. The molar absorpthrlty is 2.39 X lo4 L m0l-l cm-l. Eight repllcate determinations of a sample solution containing 5 pg of Iron gave a mean absorbance of 0.430 with a relatlve standard deviation of 0.79 %. The Interference of various ions has been studied and the method has been employed to the determinatlon of iron in standard reference material, wine, beer, whisky, brandy, tomato julce, mlxed vegetable julce, and natural water samples.
