The award will first be presented in 1985 and will consist of $3000 and a certificate. In odd-numbered years, the award will be presented for advances in techniques or fundamental processes in mass spectrometry; in even-numbered years it will be awarded for development of the applications of mass spectrometry. It will be granted without
regard to age, nationality, sex, or the date of the achievement to be recognized by the award.
Toxic Chemicals Laboratory Constructed at NBS A special toxic chemicals laboratory has been constructed at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Center for Analytical Chemistry for storing, handling, and analyzing highly toxic
Research chemist Kristy Richie at work in the NBS's new toxic chemicals laboratory or carcinogenic substances such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-PAHs, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The laboratory includes two specially designed storage cabinets in which chemicals are kept in doubly sealed containers and two air-barrier fume hoods, all of which are exhausted continuously through charcoal filters. An air recirculation system cycles the air in the remainder of the laboratory at 4000 ft3/min through charcoal and high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) filters. The room is maintained at a negative pressure relative to adjacent hallways and labs as an additional safeguard against the possible diffusion of toxic vapors.
