Silica Gel Desiccant Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT This monograph for Silica Gel Desiccant provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance and applications. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Suitability for Moisture Absorption.

CAS No. 7631-86-9

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Typical appearance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . colorless or white solid Applications . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . drying agent

SPECIFICATIONS Suitability for moisture absorption . . . . . . . . . Passes test

TESTS Suitability for Moisture Absorption Weigh accurately about 5 g in a tared weighing dish. Place the dish for 24 h in a desiccator in which the atmosphere possesses a relative humidity of 80%, maintained by equilibrium with sulfuric acid having a specific gravity of 1.19 (27% H2SO4). The increase in weight should not be less than 27%. Note: This test is adapted from Rosin, 1967.
