Radial chromatography over a quarter of a circle can conveniently he performed as shown in Figure la. A redangular piece of thin glass is placed on the hottom of a cylindrical vessel; its dimensions are such that i t rests against the wall a t an angle of about 4 5 O . The glass plate is covered with a piece of filter paper and several milliliters of the solvent mixture selected as eluent are added. Development starts as soon as the thin layer plate-which has been spotted with the sample solution very close to the corner-is put on the filter paper as shown in the figure. Alternatively, anecan use acentrifuge tube of suitablesize and leaveout the piece of glass. The thin layer plate now touches the wetted filter paper on the spherical bottom, where the tangent is about 45" (Fig. lb).
