2-3 SMA 4000A is the lowest available molecular weight styrene and maleic anhydride copolymer, and can only be obtained from Sinclair Petrochemicals, Inc. This unique resin is the newest of a family currently finding wide use in specialty applications. SMA 4000A is used as a cross-linking agent for epoxy resins and as a base for manufacturing polymeric plasticizers. Other SMA base resins and their esters are available from Sinclair in commercial quantities. The chemical nature of these water-white resins allows them to undergo typical anhydride reactions using standard procedures to prepare esters,
metal salts, amide-amine salts, amide-ammonium salts and imides. Sinclair can modify these polyelectrolytes to permit varying degrees of alkali, acid and solvent solubility, various molecular weights, increased film forming properties and increased anhydride functionality, thus expanding their potential use.
