Soda Lime Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT This monograph for Soda Lime provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance and applications. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Carbon Dioxide Absorption Capacity, Loss on Drying, and Fines.

CAS No. 8006-28-8

Note: Soda lime is a mixture of variable proportions of sodium hydroxide with calcium oxide or hydroxide. This reagent may or may not include an indicator.

TESTS Carbon Dioxide Absorption Capacity Fill the lower transverse section of a U-shaped drying tube of about 15 mm internal diameter and 15 cm height with loosely packed glass wool. Place in one arm of the tube about 5 g of anhydrous calcium chloride, and accurately weigh the tube, and its contents. Into the other arm of the tube place 9.5–10.5 g of soda lime, and again weigh accurately. Insert stoppers in the open arms of the U-tube, and connect the side tube of the arm filled with soda lime to a calcium chloride drying tube, which in turn is connected to a suitable source of carbon dioxide. Pass the carbon dioxide though the U-tube at a rate of 75 mL/min for 30 min, accurately timed. Disconnect the U-tube, cool to room temperature, remove the stoppers, and weigh.

Loss on Drying Weigh accurately about 10 g, and dry in a preconditioned crucible at 200 °C for 18 h.

Fines Place 100 g on a clean U.S. No. 100 standard sieve nested in a receiving pan. Cover the sieve, and shake on a mechanical shaker for 5 min. The weight of the fine material in the receiving pan should not exceed 1.0 g.
