Some Deuterium Labelling Experiments J. R. Hanson School of Molecular Sciences, University of Sussex, Brighton EN1 9Q.J. England Methods of labelling organic molecules provide a useful vehicle for teaching several aspects of preparative and mechanistic organic chemistry ( I ) . Some deuteriation experiments can be carried out quite easily by undergraduates on a small scale usine deuterium oxide as the source of label. With access to a simile nmr instrument, the site and extent of deuteriation can be detected spectroscopically and thus these experiments also illustrate the application of physical methods to oreanic chemistrv. These exveriments can act as few colshort "riders"
