Here's a complete bag of thickening tricks. It's Cab-O-Sil? A fumed silica made up of submicron particles, fused together to form chainlike aggregates. Dispersed in a liquid, these aggregates use surface hydroxyl groups to link themselves together. The result is a threedimensional network that physically slows down liquidflow— to whatever speed your process or product works at best.

With as little as 1 % Cab-O-Sil, thicken offset, flexographic, rotogravure and letterpress inks. The fine-particle network swings open to let the ink distribute evenly on the rollers, then slams shut to guard the viscosity. So there's no

Add enough Cab-O-Sil to a liquid, and you've got a gel. Yet when you spray, brush, squeeze or lay-up the gel on a surface, the particle chains instantly uncouple, and it becomes a free-

pressroom misting or flying. Ink gloss is preserved, because the higher viscosity reduces over-absorption of ink components on high porosity papers. Use Cab-O-Sil to thicken ballpoint pen pressure-cartridge inks, so that the shear force of the ballpoint thins out the ink as you write. (The astronauts find this handy for non-gravity notemaking.)

flowing liquid again. When the liquid comes to rest, the particle chains close ranks, and you're back to a gel. That's thixotropy—thickening with a foolproof memory. Add Cab-O-Sil to a hair coloring kit powder, so that in solution it stirs to the right drip-free creaminess—can be applied to highlight single strands in a hairdo. Formulate viscosity-stable lipstick that retains its shape, even under a blazing Bahamas sun. Mix Cab-O-Sil into a lotion, to make it cling gently to a soft shoulder —yet turn to an instantly-absorbed liquid when rubbed into the skin.

Cab-O-Sil makes sagging and draining^ disappear during RP hand lay-up, spra^M up or molding operations for appliances, furniture, shower stalls^ boats, auto bodies. Once thickened with Cab-O-Sil^ \ laminating or

thicktricks Cab-O-Sil. gel coat polyester resins can be applied in precise, uniform thicknesses. Cab-O-Sil widens the range of resin choices, because it can thicken lower viscosity resins that have superior wetting properties. It's an easy trick to pick the grade of Cab-O-Sil that gives you the most efficient, economical resin system. Stick with Cab-O-Sil to give pressuresensitive, wet lay-up and hot-melt adhesives better tack, and protect their viscosity over a wide range of processing temperatures. Use it in neoprene and urethane adhesives to prevent adhesive "strike-through" on exposed fabric or other porous surfaces.

Get a thinner, yet viscosity-stable adhesive film for bonding laminates—prevent oozing and adhesive waste. Mix Cab-O-Sil into gun-applied adhesives and sealants to ward off slumping on vertical or angled surfaces. (Cab-O-Sil not only thickens an adhesive used f to encapsulate electronic components—it gives the adhesive shock-absorbing resiliency that dampens harmful vibration.) Cab-O-Sil thickens dozens of other products — paints, aerosols, acids, coatings, foods, lubricants, soaps, polishes. Now... like to think up a few* quick, thick tricks of your own?
