Witco's new phthalic anhydride plant in Perth Amboy, N. J., combines the latest advances in process control systems and unique laboratory control measures to check every critical step of manufacture. These careful procedures closely follow the proven system at Witco's Chicago phthalic plant — systems that help assure phthalic anhydride of consistent high quality. For instance, selective sampling and testing at key production stages include: IMA unique stream analyzer that permits actual spot testing and checking of raw materials and end products in the reactors while the plant is in continuous operation. 2MPolarographs and chromatographs that separate and quantitatively measure naphthaquinone, maleic anhydride and trace impurity levels. This permits rapid minor adjustments in operating conditions to minimize impurities. S • Extremely sensitive chemical and physical tests, in cluding frequent color tests, for checking stability and heat degradation. These tests help assure a fully refined and exceptionally high quality phthalic.
