Most organic chemicals are now made wholly or in part from petroleum or natural gas. Therefore, the markets for petrochemicals are virtually the same as the markets for organic chemicals in general. This paper presents a bibliography of the key sources of in formation on the markets for petrochemicals, and organic chemicals in general, including general sources, chemi cal-consuming industries, and chemicals and chemical end products.

P e t r o l e u m chemicals or ''petrochemicals'' are chemicals derived from petroleum, liquefied petroleum gases, or natural gas. These raw materials are the major sources of organic chemicals today, and the term petrochemicals is v i r t u a l l y s y n onymous with " o r g a n i c chemicals." Therefore, the markets for petrochemicals are the same as the markets for organic chemicals i n general. E v e n a few inorganic chemicals—for example, sulfur, sulfuric acid, a m m o n i a , a n d hydrogen cyanide—are made from petroleum a n d natural gas. V i r t u a l l y all organic chemicals are made wholly or i n part from petroleum a n d natural gas. M e t h a n e , ethane, propane, butane, ethylene, propylene, butylènes, cyclohexane, a n d other nonaromatic hydrocarbons a n d their derivatives are made entirely from petroleum and natural gas. Toluene, xylenes, cresylic acids, ammonia, cyclopentadiene, a n d their derivatives are made principally, although not entirely, from petroleum a n d natural gas. Benzene, acetylene, hydrogen cyanide, sulfur, and their derivatives are made i n part from petroleum a n d natural gas, although other sources are more important. A s a matter of fact, there are very few organic chemicals which are not made wholly or i n part from petroleum or natural gas. A few examples of chemicals not made from petroleum or natural gas are naphthols, regenerated cellulose, fatty acids, toxaphene, furfural, glutamic acid, a n d sorbitol. However, petrochemicals are so synonymous with organic chemicals that the sources of market information can be considered to be the same as those for organic chemicals i n general.

Market Potentials W h a t are the markets for petrochemicals or organic chemicals i n general? T h e sale of most chemicals will come under one of four categories: Sales to other chemical companies to make other chemicals or chemical end-products. Sales to chemical-consuming industries (other than the chemical industry) to use in processing or to make into consumer products. Sales directly into wholesale and retail trade channels. Export sales. 426

Sales to Other C h e m i c a l Companies. T h i s comprises the sale of intermediates from one chemical company to another, such as acetone, phenol, formaldehyde, glycerin, ammonia, a n d phthalic anhydride. T h e purchasing chemical companies use the chemicals to make other chemicals a n d ultimately to make chemical e n d products, such as plastics, fibers, medicinals, fertilizer, synthetic rubber, a n t i knock agents, pesticides, and lubricating oil additives. V i r t u a l l y a l l of the chemicals sold b y one chemical company to another are intermediates rather t h a n chemical end-products. C h e m i c a l end-products, such as plastics, fibers, a n d pesticides, are rarely sold from one chemical company to another. Sales to C h e m i c a l - C o n s u m i n g Industries. T h i s comprises sales to (1) m a n u facturing industries, such as the textile, rubber, paint, plastics fabricating, petroleum, pharmaceutical, food processing, m i n i n g and smelting, metal fabricating, paper, and leather industries; (2) service industries, such as l a u n d r y , d r y cleaning, transporta tion, and communications; a n d (3) agriculture. These industries use the chemicals they purchase for processing or for m a k i n g consumer products. T h e y do not use purchased chemicals to make other chemicals, except i n a few rare instances. Sales D i r e c t l y into Wholesale a n d R e t a i l T r a d e Channels. C o m p a r a t i v e l y few chemical products are sold directly into wholesale or retail trade channels. A few examples are household insecticides, some fertilizers, soil conditioners, a n t i freezes, and cellulose sponges. Export Sales. Chemicals used i n the export trade are, of course, consumed i n foreign countries i n the same categories just discussed. However, exported chemi cals are i n a special class because, regardless of their use i n the foreign country, they are removed from the channels of trade i n the U n i t e d States.
