LABORATORY OF THE MONTH Soviet Analytical Instruments Belgium. More t h a n anything else the Sputniks have given Soviet B RUSSELS, science new prestige. So it isn't surprising t h a t t h e Sputnik display is one of the most crowded in t h e USSR Pavilion a t the Brussels Exposition. Less spectacular t o t h e general public, but giving a good indication of the scientific accomplishments of the Soviet Union, is the variety of scientific instruments shown. M o s t of these, as far as analytical instruments are concerned, are not in the Soviet Pavilion b u t in t h e Palace of Science. This is an international exhibit devoted to fundamental science, with exhibits by many countries including t h e United States and the USSR. Exhibits are grouped into four sections: atom, crystal, molecule, and living cell. They give excellent demonstrations to laymen—and scientists too—of such things as t h e principles of various high energy particle accelerators, crystal lattices, molecular structure of polymers, enzyme action, and various biochemical reactions. T h e USSR has contributed some excellent displays of this sort. T h e exhibit where most of these photographs were taken shows how various spectrophotometers and spectrographs a r e used. Some of t h e instruments a r e marked as contributions b y certain research institutes. Others are marked with model numbers, implying t h a t they are produced on a regular basis. Judging from their appearance, t h e Soviet laboratories have a wide variety of analytical instruments a t their command. N o t e : T h e London Editor of t h e ACS Applied Publications secured these photos of Soviet instrumentation. T h e editors feel that a pictorial presentation of such instrumentation, even though not t h e usual Laboratory of t h e M o n t h , would be of interest t o readers of ANALYTICAL C H E M I S T R Y .

WALL COOLING is employed rather than a coil! Heat transfer is spread over a large area, and consequently there is a minimum temperature differential. Faster cooling or heating. Wide opening. No room is lost to a coil and diffuser panel. VERSATILE WACO BATH is used as a reaction site for organic syntheses, as a bath for the determination of physical con stants, for bio-chemical procedures, ASTM tests, etc., for supplying constant tempera ture circulant to viscosimeters, refractometers, etc. A 3^ h . p . hermetically sealed compressor is used. An easily adjustable magnetic-setting mercury thermoregulator provides temperature control of ± .05° C . Heating element permits operation above room temperature. Inside dimensions are 2 9 " long X 14" wide X 10" d e e p . All controls are conven iently arranged at one e n d . #AC884 W A C O Refrigerated 115 volt, 60 cycle current
