They offer unique possibilities as processing aids and metal carriers in hydrocarbon formulations. • Witco's metallic salts of naphthenic, octoic, and tall oil fatty acids primarily offer potential as oxidation catalysts and polymerization accelerators. Activity is dependent on the metal cation—cobalt, manganese, lead, zinc, calcium, iron, or copper. They are widely used to speed up or slow down the drying time of many protective coatings. They are also used to accelerate the polymerization of polyester and silicone alkyd resins. • These metallic carboxylates find a number of other interesting uses. They impart rot resistance and water repellency to wood, textiles and cordage; harden foundry core oil binders and composition board binders; and impart anti-corrosion properties to lube oils and greases.
