SPECIAL FEATURE SECTION: POLYMORPHISM AND CRYSTALLIZATION

Editorial Since the last special issue of Organic Process Research & DeVelopment on Polymorphism and Crystallization which appeared 3 years ago (Sept/Oct 2000), there has been much activity in the field, and some new books, or new editions of old books have appeared. Important additions to my library have been Polymorphism in Molecular Crystals by Joel Bernstein (Oxford, 2002) and Handbook of Pharmaceutical Salts, Properties Selection and Use by P. H. Stahl and C. G. Wermuth (Wiley VCH, 2002), whereas the standard work of Mullin on Crystallisation has been updated and expanded in its 4th edition (Butterworth Heinemann, 2001). Other works to be updated include Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Technology (Swarbrick and Boylan, Marcel Dekker - three volumes in its abbreviated form, 2002), Crystal Growth of Organic Materials (Myerson, Oxford 2002), and Solid State Chemistry of Drugs (Byrn, SSCI Inc, 2000). All this activity testifies to the importance of the topic both theoretically and practically. In industry there is a need for scientists to keep up-to-date with this rapidly expanding and complex subject, and conferences and training courses are available from several organisations, including the American Chemical Society and Scientific Update, my own company. This latest special issue, which follows this editorial, provides new case studies which enhance the literature and provide absorbing reading. I thank all the authors for spending time writing up their work, the reviewers for their comments which always result in improved papers, and companies for allowing their work to be published.
