m.p. 232'(d.) separated directly from the reaction mixture. To 3% mg. of this crude p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazone was added a previouily prepared solution containing 1.7 g. of sodium in 50 ml. of ethylene glycol, and the reaction mixture was allowed to reflux for 1.5 hours under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with water, and extracted exhaustively with ether. The ether layer was washed with dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid and with water. The ether was evaporated in uucuo and the residue was crystallized from ethanol-water, yielding 145.5 mg. of A7-cholesten-3P-ol, m.p. 108-115° (43% from 3B-acetoxycholestan-7-one). Purification was effected by chromatography on a column of alufnina, A7-cholesten-3P-zl being eluted with 3-2 benzene-etherb m.p. 120-123 , [ a ] 2 e ~ -3' (chloroform) (lit.29 m.p. 123 , [ a ] zk0'). ~ (29) Fr. Deuterium analyses were performed by combustioq of the organic sample and isotopic analysis of the water formed by the "falling drop" method.30 T h e isotope position analyses were calculated from the infrared spectrum of the unknown sample and the spectra of Be- and GB-deutero3~-acetoxycholestan-7-one which were obtained from zincdeuterium bromide reduction of Ba-bromo-3~-ac$oxycholestan-7-one and by the synthesis shown in Flg. 3 , respectively, using optical densities a t v m R X . The spectra of these epimeric 6-deutero-7-k-etolles are recorded i n V1g. 4. (30) A. S. Keston, D. Rittenberg P ~ < I t ,I S
