symposium was held April 2-5, 2001 at the American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in San Diego, California. The symposium was a major success just like our previous meeting that was held in Dallas, Texas in the spring of 1998 that led to the book entitled Silicones and Silicone-Modified Materials: edited by S. J. Clarson, J. J. Fitzgerald, M. J. Owen, and S. D. Smith; ACS Symposium Series 729; American Chemical Society: Washington, D.C.; ISBN 0-8412-3613-5. The four full-day symposium consisted of 55 oral presentations and an evening poster session of 37 presentations. We are delighted that we are now able to share 31 of these contributions with you in this book and note that the summaries of all the contributions to the symposium can be found in Polymer Preprints, Volume 42, Number 1, 2001, pages 85-257. Our sincere thanks go to the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry, Inc. and especially to our patient Program Chair Carrington Smith and to our gracious Treasurer Kathleen Havelka. I thank Siddharth Patwardhan and Hyeon Woo Ahn for help with some of the manuscripts that arrived on my "i-desk" in electronic form. At the ACS Books Department Kelly Dennis and Stacy Vanderwall in acquisitions and Margaret Brown in editing/production have been simply delightful to work with on this project and all were kind, helpful, and patient beyond words during the preparation of this book. We also thank Dow Corning, Procter and Gamble, and the ACS for kindly providingfinancialsupport and thus making it possible for many of our presenters to be able to attend this symposium. We were all deeply saddened that one of our dear colleagues and an invited speaker Dr. Tony Semlyen left us in this world shortly before our symposium in San Diego, California. We thereby humbly dedicate this book to Tony and we are sure that his pioneering contributions in the areas of ring-chain equilibria of siloxane systems and cyclic poly(siloxanes) will be appreciated by future generations of scientists. We were pleased that Tony Dagger bravely agreed to give Tony Semlyen's oral

presentation in San Diego and that he also ensured that we were able to include this presentation as a chapter in this book.

We trust that that the material herein will be of widespread interest to the global silicones community and we hope to see you at the third Silicones and Silicone-Modified Materials symposium at the ACS National Meeting in Anaheim, California from March 28-April 2,2004.
