SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Strategic Recruitment in Drug Discovery Senior Organic/Medicinal Chemist The Drug Discovery Division of Southern Research Institute (SR) invites applications from senior organic/medicinal chemists with experience in drug discovery and lead optimization to join the Medicinal Chemistry Department. The Drug Discovery Division is focused on the translation of novel ideas from the bench to the clinic and has successfully advanced over 20 compounds into clinical studies. In collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the Division established the Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance that currently has 18 programs in various stages of discovery with several in lead optimization. To be in a position to exploit these projects and other projects, we are looking to hire experienced medicinal chemists interested in participating in collaborative drug discovery projects. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry and should have an externally funded, grant-based research program or have demonstrated the ability to establish one. Key to the position is an interest in working on collaborative projects with excellent translational potential toward the identification of novel therapeutic agents. The successful candidate will also play a significant role within SR, assisting in the development of our future strategy to grow our drug discovery efforts. Endowment funds may be available for research support and program development. In addition to the capabilities listed above, our life sciences group has assay development and protein crystallography capabilities, performs in vitro and in vivo pharmacokinetic and in vivo efficacy studies. To further support these efforts, SR is planning a new drug discovery building that will house state-of-the-art synthetic and analytical chemistry laboratories. Applications should include a CV, a one- to two-page description of prior research experience, and a description of current support and future research plans. SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE is a not-for-profit research organization affiliated with UAB with annual revenues in excess of $70 million and over 600 professional, technical, and support personnel. Southern Research has an outstanding record of accomplishment in drug discovery; for example, with seven clinically employed cancer drugs on the market and several others currently undergoing clinical trials.
