Specific Rotation [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Specific Rotation]. Weigh accurately 26.0 g, and dissolve in 90 mL of water in a 100 mL volumetric flask. Dilute to volume with water at 25 °C. Observe the optical rotation in a polarimeter at 25 °C using sodium light, and calculate the specific rotation.

Insoluble Matter [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Insoluble Matter]. Use 40.0 g dissolved in 150 mL of water. Reserve the filtrate, without the washings, for preparation of sample solution A.

Loss on Drying Weigh accurately 4.9–5.1 g in a tared, preconditioned dish or crucible, and dry at 105 °C for 2 h.

Residue after Ignition [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Ignition]. Ignite 10.0 g, and moisten the char with 1 mL of sulfuric acid.

Titrable Acid To 100 mL of carbon dioxide-free water, add 0.10 mL of phenolphthalein indicator solution and 0.01 N sodium hydroxide until a pink color is produced. Dissolve 10.0 g of the sample in this solution, and titrate with 0.01 N sodium hydroxide to the same end point. Not more than 0.83 mL should be required.



For the Determination of Chloride, Sulfate and Sulfite, Heavy Metals, and Iron

S a m p l e S o l u t i o n A . Transfer the filtrate from the test for insoluble matter to a 200 mL volumetric flask, and dilute to volume with water (1 mL = 200 mg).

Chloride† Dilute 10 mL of sample solution A (2.0 g sample), with water to 50 mL. Dilute 5 mL of this solution with water to 25 mL, and add 1 mL of nitric acid and 1 mL of silver nitrate reagent solution. Any turbidity should not exceed that produced by 0.01 mg of chloride ion (Cl) in an equal volume of solution containing the quantities of reagents used in the test.

[Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Sulfate; Procedure for Sulfate, Method 2]. Use 5.0 mL of sample solution A (1.0 g sample), add 1 mL of bromine water, and boil. Omit evaporation to dryness, and follow Method 1 for the remainder of the test, starting with adding 1 mL of dilute hydrochloric acid (1:19).

Heavy Metals† [Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Heavy Metals (as Lead); Procedure for Heavy Metals, Method 1]. Use 25.0 mL of sample solution A (5.0 g sample) to prepare the sample solution, and use 5.0 mL of sample solution A to prepare the control solution.

[Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Iron; Procedure for Iron, Method 1 (Ammonium Thiocyanate)]. Use 10.0 mL of sample solution A (2.0 g sample).

Invert Sugar Prepare 1 L of a reagent solution containing 150 g of potassium bicarbonate, 100 g of potassium carbonate, and 6.928 g of cupric sulfate pentahydrate. Transfer 50 mL of this reagent to a 400 mL beaker, cover, heat to boiling, and allow to boil for 1 min. Dissolve 10.0 g of the sample in water, dilute with water to 50 mL, and add this solution to the solution in the 400 mL beaker. Heat to boiling, and boil for 5 min. At the end of this period, stop the reaction by adding 100 mL of cold, recently boiled water. Filter through a tared, preconditioned filtering crucible, wash thoroughly, and dry at 105 °C. The weight of the precipitate should not exceed 0.0277 g.
