This puzzle contains 29 names, terms, prefixes, and acronyms that describe sugars and their polymers. Find and highlight these terms in the matrix below. “CARBOHYDRATE” is already done for you. Then, correctly transfer them to the blanks in the description below the matrix. Use the letters remaining in the matrix to complete the sentence describing these molecules. Your success will be rewarded. The answers to the Sugar Wordsearch are found below. Good hunting!

Use the remaining letters to fill in the following sentence:

CARBOHYDRATEs can be S_ _ _ _ _ S_ _ _ _s that are either A_ _ _ _ _ _ or K_ _ _ _ _ _ and are therefore R_ _ _ _ _ _ _ sugars. Table sugar, S_ _ _ _ _ _ , is a D_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ of the H_ _ _ _ _ s F_ _ _ _ _ _ _ and G_ _ _ _ _ _ in cyclic furanose and P_ _ _ _ _ _ _ forms, respectively. L_ _ _ _ _ _ is glucose linked to G_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . Plants store energy in the _ _ _ _saccharide S_ _ _ _ _ , which contains A_ _ _ _ _ _ and A_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . The animal equivalent is G_ _ _ _ _ _ _ . The only _ _ _ _mer in them is the alpha A_ _ _ _ _ of glucose. Beta-linked glucose or N-acetylglucosamine makes C_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ or C_ _ _ _ _ , respectively. Both are structural polymers. Complex molecules like G_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ s and _ _ _ _ _ P _ _ _ _ _ _ s have sugars attached. Finally, phosphodi_ _ _ _ _ bonds link R_ _ _ _ _ units in the backbone of _ _ _ . Converting the pentose into the deoxy form produces a _ _ _ strand. _ _ _ _ _ _

CARBOHYDRATEs can be SIMPLE SUGARs that are either ALDOSES or KETOSES and therefore REDUCING sugars. Table sugar, SUCROSE, is a DISACCHARIDE of the HEXOSEs FRUCTOSE and GLUCOSE in cyclic furanose and PYRANOSE forms, respectively. LACTOSE is glucose linked to GALACTOSE. Plants store energy in the POLYsaccharide STARCH which contains AMYLOSE and AMYLOPECTIN. The animal equivalent is GLYCOGEN. The only MONOmer in them is the alpha ANOMER of glucose. Beta-linked glucose or N-acetylglucosamine make CELLULOSE or CHITIN, respectively. Both are structural polymers. Complex molecules like GLYCOLIPIDs and GLYCOPROTEINs have sugars attached. Finally, phosphodiESTER bonds link RIBOSE units in the backbone of RNA. Converting the pentose into the deoxy form produces a DNA strand.
