Progress Report Number 40

Summary of activities of the Committee on Professional Training for 1966 C. Walling, Chairman R. A. Alberty L. B. Clapp B. L. Crawford, Jr. E. L. Haenisch

G. S. Hammond E. L King R. N. Smith W. G. Young J. H. Howard, Secretary

Three meetings were held by the committee during 1966: in Pittsburgh, Pa., March 25-27; in Washington, D.C., April 23-24; and in New York City, Sept. 9-12. The "open meeting" scheduled in New York City in September afforded an opportunity to all members of the Society to discuss subjects of mutual interest with the committee. A similar meeting will be scheduled in September 1967. Undergraduate evaluations Undergraduate programs of chemistry were evaluated at 31 institutions during 1966. The majority of these were conducted under the new policy whereby a questionnaire is first completed by the department chairman. This is followed by an informal conference with the committee, and action is then considered with respect to a formal visitation, a request for additional information, or approval or the withholding of approval as such. Five visitations were made in connection with the 31 evaluations undertaken during the year. There were 348 schools on the approved list of the Society at the end of 1966 as compared with 333 schools at the end of 1965. Table III reports information for each approved institution with respect to the number of certified students receiving bachelor's degrees for the period July 1, 1965, to June 30, 1966. The numbers of M.S. and Ph.D. degrees conferred are also listed. Table IV provides similar information from institutions approved by the Society as a result of their accreditation in chemical engineering by AIChE and ECPD. Annual reports and reporting procedures As indicated in Progress Report Number 39 (C&EN, March 7, 1966, page 7 8 ) , annual reports were sent to approximately one third of the approved schools. The transition to triennial reports rather than annual reports has eased the workload of the committee and it is believed that this revised procedure will continue to provide sufficient information to the committee for its purposes. Equally important, the procedure relieves the schools of the burden of supplying reports every year. Another one third of the approved schools will receive requests for triennial reports in 1967. ACS Directory of Graduate Research Faculties, publications, and doctoral theses in departments or divisions of chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering at United States universities Information for the 1967 edition of the directory will be 68 C&EN MARCH 20, 1967

requested in May of 1967. All departments or divisions of chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering offering organized curriculums leading to the Ph.D. degree in these fields will be invited to provide information. The directory will include a listing of all staff publications appearing in recognized scientific journals during the period July 1, 1965, through June 30, 1967. The directory will also include tables of statistical information for graduate departments offering doctoral programs of training in chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering. Qualified graduate departments which do not receive requests for information in May should advise the Secretary of the Committee on Professional Training as promptly as possible. The directory will be available in the fall of 1967 from the Special Issues Sales Department, American Chemical Society, 1155-16th St., N.W., Washington, D C . 20036. Copies of the 1965 edition are still available for $5.00 each, student price $4.00. Planning for graduate work in chemistry Approximately 1100 copies of this booklet have been sold during the past year. The booklet contains sample questions from selected graduate departments covering the fields of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. It also reviews important points to be considered by students contemplating graduate study. Copies may be obtained at 50 cents each, prepaid, from the Secretary of the Committee on Professional Training, American Chemical Society, 343 State St., Rochester, N.Y. 14650. Graduate programs of education in chemistry The committee devoted considerable time during the year in the continued study of the problems associated with doctoral education in chemistry. Furthermore, this area of study will receive emphasis again this year. The committee has been approached by a number of institutions to inquire about conferences to discuss graduate programs. In this connection, it is very glad to meet with departments contemplating the introduction of doctoral programs or desiring to strengthen or revise present programs. No further reports were issued by the committee during the year, although the most recent report, which was published in May 1964, is still available upon request to the Secretary of the Committee on Professional Training, 343 State St., Rochester, N.Y. 14650. Relations with other groups The committee is increasingly aware of the importance of effective communications with the various individuals and groups, both within and outside the Society, on matters pertaining to the education of chemists. This has become especially important in view of the rapid pace of experimentation in curriculums and the introduction of new concepts in the educational process itself. Not only are a number of the committee members working actively with other groups within and outside the Society for this pur-

pose, but such liaison and cooperation will be further encouraged by greater efforts to improve communications, especially with other divisions of the Society, and by annual open meetings. Committee changes Dr. Cheves Walling of Columbia University has been reappointed Chairman of the committee. Dr. L. B. Clapp of Brown University and Dr. George S. Hammond of California Institute of Technology retired from the committee at the end of 1966 upon completion of their terms. The committee is indebted to them for their excellent support and contributions during the years of their service. Dr. Glenn A. Berchtold of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. William H. Eberhardt of Georgia Institute of Technology have been appointed new committee members. List of approved schools The Committee on Professional Training recognizes that there are many institutions having adequate instruction in chemistry which are not on the Society's list of approved schools. These institutions may offer excellent education in chemistry within their stated educational objectives or to the extent permitted by their particular circumstances without professing to prepare students for professional work in chemistry upon their graduation with the bachelor's degree. Nevertheless, they send many of these students to graduate schools to complete their professional education and these students often make excellent records in their graduate work. The committee feels strongly that this type of institution is very valuable in the American system of education. Graduate schools and employers of chemists will continue to recognize that high-quality students, well educated in the elementary principles of chemistry, graduate from colleges not on the approved list of the Society. There may be departments of chemistry in schools not on the approved list of the American Chemical Society which meet the minimum standards of the Society but are unaware that a request for study or reconsideration by the Committee on Professional Training must be initiated by the presidents of their respective institutions. The committee is glad to cooperate with such departments if invited to do so. Students who receive the bachelor's degree from institutions in the following list and who are certified by the department chairman as having fulfilled the minimum requirements for the .professional education of chemists adopted by the American Chemical Society are eligible for admission as MEMBERS of the Society following graduation and after two years of active participation in chemical or chemical engineering work. Students who are graduates from other programs will be eligible for admission as MEMBERS after five years of active participation in chemical or chemical engineering work. If students or graduates are not eligible to become MEMBERS, they may still apply for admission as ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. The American Chemical Societyofficers of local sections and divisions and chapters of student affiliates

partment of Chemistry, Auburn University, Auburn, Ala. 36830 Treasurer, Dr. J. Marshall Baker Baton Rouge Chairman, Dr. Julian B. Honeycutt, Jr. Chairman-Elect, Dr. Harry V. Drushel Secretary, Dr. Fred J. Impastato, Ethyl Corp., P.O. Box 341, Baton Rouge, La. 70821 Treasurer, Dr. George R. Huddleston,

Jr. Although the ACS is international in scope with members in nearly every country in the world, its principal efforts are directed to the service of chemists and chemical engineers in the United States. As one important means to this end it has established local sections. Each of the 167 ACS local sections has an assigned territory, and each member residing within such an area belongs to that section unless other arrangements are requested. The section organization now is so comprehensive that nearly 97% of all members in the United States are in section territory. A second means of service is the establishment of divisions. Divisions represent special interest areas within the broad fields of chemistry and chemical engineering. They have no geographical boundaries and any member may enroll in any division which interests him.

Local Section officers Local sections serve members by providing programs of activities beneficial to chemistry and the chemical profession which are readily available in nearly every area of the country. They implement parts of national programs and serve as a means of effecting liaison between members and governing bodies of the Society (C&EN, Feb. 13, page 6 2 ) . Exchanges of ideas among sections may lead to solutions to common problems

and improved programs and services. Contact may be made through the appropriate local section secretary. Akron Chairman, Henry J. Kehe Chairman-Elect, Vernon L. Folt Secretary, Dr. Henry J.
